Alfred Janson Bloor, an architect in New York City, was born in 1828. He was the American Institute of Architects' secretary during 1870-1888, and he worked as assistant secretary of the U.S. Sanitary Commission in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and elsewhere during the Civil War. American artist, connoisseur, and art dealer, born Mar. 17, 1822 in New York City; died there on Aug. 11, 1904. Avery began his career as an engraver on copper and wood, then established himself as an art dealer in 1865, making annual purchasing trips to Europe each year between 1871 and 1882.
